By special agreement with ODNR Division of Wildlife, hunting is being permitted at Baldwin
Woods Preserve and Cricket Frog Cove Area under specific guidelines subject to annual changes.
Hunting is used as a land management tool while providing recreation to the public.
Hunters enter the property at their own risk. Some hazards such as deep animal holes,
tree roots, barbed wire fencing, piles of debris, and fallen trees can be found throughout
park properties. Caution should be exercised.

HUNTING IN BALDWIN WOODS:
Small game hunting permitted. No waterfowl hunting (see below). Deer
hunting permitted.
Baldwin Woods consists of approximately 126 acres of property located at the
corner of Range Line and Euler Roads. It has approximately 80 acres of wooded
area and 40 acres of grassland.
This program will be reviewed annually to determine if it is appropriate to continue,
or if changes are needed for the following year. It is the desire of the Board of Park
Commissioners and the Park District staff to keep this land natural for propagating wild
areas and protecting threatened plant species. Please note: The Park District has
entered into a Wetland Reserve agreement with the Federal Government involving
approximately 50 acres of land at Baldwin Woods. An eight-acre wetland was
constructed at Baldwin Woods in 2000 to enhance the wildlife population, create diversity,
and provide a resting area for migrating waterfowl.
Dog training dates will occur from September 1 through February 28 annually. Dog
training will be prohibited beginning March 1 and ending August 31 annually. From
March through August, Baldwin Woods will provide a resting area for migrating waterfowl
during the mating season. This change is due to the creation of the wetland.
Please see FAQs in this section for more information.

Answers to Frequently
Asked Questions:
Yes, the Wood County Park District has
approved field training of dogs at Baldwin Woods. It is posted as, "Field
training prohibited March 1-August 31." This translates to field training of
dogs is allowed September 1- February 28. The March through August
prohibition period has been set up in order to provide a secure rest stop
for migrating and nesting waterfowl at Baldwin Woods during that time.
When field training dogs, all other park rules
must be followed. Please note that this includes the following: the Preserve
is open to Registered Hunters ONLY on Thursdays, Fridays, and
Saturdays from September 1-October 31 and six days per week, Mondays through
Saturdays, from November 1-January 31.
No, you may not use
any .22-caliber rifles or handguns to hunt at Baldwin Woods Preserve. This
is one of the original agreements that the Park District made with the
surrounding neighbors to make hunting safer for everyone. Over all, rifle
and handgun bullets travel faster and further than shotgun shells. This
regulation will provide a safe hunting experience for nearby residents.
The Park District has reviewed this, but has implemented a "No Waterfowl
Hunting Policy." Besides being a very small hunting area for public use,
Baldwin Woods is a resting point for a great deal of waterfowl in the
Mississippi Flyway during their migration north and south each year.
Lead shot is not allowed at Baldwin Woods (or Cricket Frog Cove) due to
the wetland that was constructed there in 2000. Waterfowl use stones or
small pebbles to aid in digestion; they basically eat stones and small
pebbles to use in their crop to grind food. Waterfowl don't distinguish lead
shot from stones, so lead shot is the perfect size for the purpose. The
waterfowl eat the lead shot to help digestion and end up developing cancer
due to the lead shot in their system.
The Park District believes it is one of many agencies to remove lead
shot from use for the protection of the environment. Steel shot or nontoxic
shot may be used at Baldwin Woods or Cricket Frog Cove.
